The nullification crisis was caused by South Carolina's Ordinance of Nullification, which considered the Tariffs of 1828 and 1832 as unconstitutional and considered them void. South Carolina blamed the tariffs put in place after the War of 1812 for the economic downturn in the 1820's. There was a split on the issue between Calhoun and Andrew Jackson, believing that the state has the right to nullify due to the constitution. Henry Clay wrote a compromise tariff in 1833 to solve the issue which cut the import taxes until 1842 when they reach back to the levels of the 1816 Tariff.
